Both presidential nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump pledged to bring manufacturing jobs back to American shores as the economy became a central theme in this year’s presidential elections.

Between 2000 and 2009 close to 6 million manufacturing jobs were lost, many due to the practice known as offshoring, or moving a business’s production or services abroad to capitalize on lower costs.

But some jobs, once thought to be forever lost to cheaper labor overseas, have already started to return.

Still, while closed factories continue to reopen, critics argue, without government policies that help improve our skilled workforce, tax reform, and renegotiation of trade deals, the U.S. will continue to feel the effects of the millions of manufacturing jobs that were lost in the 2000s.
