The private sector is working to start an institution based on ethical banking in Mexico, drawing on the experiences of Triodos Bank, Europe's leading provider of sustainable banking services, Joan Antoni Mele, founder of Triodos Bank in Spain, said in an interview with EFE.

The goal is "to create an ethical bank (in Mexico) in the future and get the word out on this concept in the shorter term. To show the importance for the country, in general, of having a more humane, just and redistributive economy," Mele said.

Ethical banking seeks to promote a less speculative economy that benefits all citizens and the environment.

Mele, who is visiting Mexico to promote ethical banking and serve as an adviser to those seeking to launch a financial institution based on these principles, said his trip was aimed at "starting to establish" a program that will allow backers of the concept to open a sustainable bank within three years.

The Mexican project, which will seek to provide "financing for the real economy," can look to Triodos as a positive example, Mele said.
