Education officials in Mexico have announced plans to fire 1,255 teachers and school employees in two states who allegedly joined protests that blocked roads and shuttered schools in the southern states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

The education department says the majority of the teachers are from Oaxaca, the epicenter of the months-long teachers' protests, where 30 percent of schools remain closed.

The department said this week the teachers in question have been brought up for dismissal for missing four days of classes. Similar actions may be taken in the states of Michoacan and Chiapas.

The teachers are protesting mandatory evaluations and testing. They have blocked roads at eight points in Oaxaca state. Business groups say that weeks of protests have caused millions of dollars in losses.
