Since 2000, a total of 9,436 animals have died in the iconic Chapultepec Zoo of Mexico City, which is one of the oldest and largest in the country, local media reported Wednesday.

Among the dead is virtually every species that can be found in a zoo, including the Mexican wolf, the axolotl of Xochimilco or Mexican salamander, and the bighorn sheep.

The official data suggests multiple causes for the animals' deaths but ecological activists and citizens say there is but one: the zoo's deplorable conditions and negligent, poorly-trained, poorly-supervised personnel.

... Several environmental organizations in Mexico and around the world have called for the close of all zoos in big cities, calling them "archaic," and proposing instead sanctuaries and reserves to improve the captive animals' standard of living.
