About 500,000 children suffer from obesity in Mexico City, a figure which represents 35 per cent of school-age children, Cuba's Prensa Latina (PL) news agency reported, citing the local Health Ministry.
The information was released by the President of the Legislative Health Committee, Nora Arias, who proposed that sports uniforms should be delivered without cost to pre-school, primary and secondary schools to promote sports.
She stated it was important to extend the hours of physical exercise and avoid selling junk food near schools to deal with early diabetes, which strikes not only the capital but also the whole country.
Arias urged the education authorities to modify the curricula to allocate additional time for physical activity, stating that unfortunately, Mexico ranked first worldwide in childhood obesity.
