Approval ratings for Mexico’s President are in a free fall. A recent poll by El Universal, a leading daily newspaper, found that nearly two out of three Mexicans disapprove of Enrique Pena Nieto’s performance in office. (CCTV America)

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s approval has plunged in a poll by Reforma newspaper to 23 percent as most people surveyed said they saw the economy worsen and violence rise over the past year.

The drop from 30 percent in April brings Pena Nieto to the lowest level in Reforma opinion polls since the late 1990s administration of Ernesto Zedillo, while the 74 percent rejection is the highest since the newspaper began polling the public in 1995. At the start of his term, Pena Nieto had gained 50 percent acceptance in an April 2013 poll.

Mexico’s economy has stumbled as exports stalled and a robust services industry slowed, registering its first quarter over quarter contraction in three years. At the same time, homicides have risen 15 percent in the first six months from a year earlier amid rising drug turf battles. Pena Nieto is also struggling to contain corruption scandals that have marred his administration as 55 percent polled by Reforma say graft has worsened in the country.

The survey of 1,200 adults in their homes from Aug. 4 to Aug. 7 has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percent.
