This Mexican Salamander Could Teach Humans How to Regrow Limbs (Wired)

Researchers are now curious to know whether humans will ever be able to activate the regenerative mechanism that is found in lower organisms. For this, they are studying the genetics of the organisms in which this magical behavior is found.

Scientists at the MDI Biological Laboratory studied three regenerative species which are; the zebrafish, a common aquarium fish originally from India; the axolotl, a salamander that is found in the lakes of Mexico; and the bichir, a ray-finned fish from Africa.

Benjamin L. King, one of the scientists involved in the study revealed that they didn’t expect the patterns of genetic expression to be vastly different in the three species, but it was amazing to see that they were consistently the same.

The study suggests that this the mechanism of regeneration has been conserved by evolution from 420 million years ago. The poor limb tissue regeneration in humans can be now understood.
