Mexico: Tropical storm Earl triggers deadly landslides, country bracing for storm Javier approaching (FRANCE 24 English)

Emergency services remained on high alert in Mexico after the remnants of now-downgraded Tropical Storm Earl wrecked havoc, burying six people in Veracruz state under landslides.

As weather reports painted a grim picture, warning of dangerous flash floods, mudslides and more rainfall in the region, authorities remained active, tracking the rising rivers and saturated soil to avoid more casualties.

Fears of additional landslides remained high in the region in spite of Miami-based National Hurricane Centre saying that Earl’s maximum wind speed on Saturday afternoon dropped to 30 mph (48kmh). Rainfall up to 18 inches (45 cm) is still expected in certain areas in Mexico, especially in Guerrero, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tlaxcula and Veracruz states.

After wrecking destruction in parts of Central America and Belize as a Category One hurricane, Earl weakened to a tropical storm, passing over Guatemala and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in the last few days. Forecasters have now said that the storm has been downgraded to a tropical depression and even though the wind speeds have dropped, heavy rains will continue to lash the region.
