President Enrique Peña Nieto said that since he took office in December 2012, Mexico's economy has added 2.03 million jobs, a number he hailed as "historic."

"This means that in the three years and seven months of this administration more jobs have been created than ever in the past, opening opportunities for more Mexicans," he said.

The number of new jobs added through June of this year "is four times higher than that of the same period of the previous administration (2006-2012)," the president said at the "Two Million Jobs" event at auto-parts company Robert Bosch's plant in Toluca, the capital of the central state of Mexico.

Peña Nieto said 41 percent of the 2,031,000 million new jobs had been taken by women, "who are increasingly being incorporated into the workforce."

One of three new jobs, meanwhile, has gone to people between the ages of 20 and 34 years, he said, adding that his administration has focused on opening more opportunities for young people.

Peña Nieto said the workers themselves deserved credit for the record job creation "because they've prepared, they've trained, they've attended educational institutions."
