Representatives of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE in Spanish) and officials from the Ministry of Public Education (SEP in Spanish) meet today in Mexico City to discuss the government's disputed educational reform.
The two sides initiated talks yesterday when the leader of the SNTE, Juan Díaz de la Torre, delivered a statement to the head of the SEP, Aurelio Nuño.
The document demands the elimination of penalties or punitive action linked with the evaluation of teachers' performance, an aspect of the reform that has been the focus of teacher protests since the bill came into force.
In addition, teachers have requested that the new laws ensure equal opportunity and the inclusion of marginalized communities.
At the conclusion of the first round of talks yesterday, the Deputy Secretary of Basic Education of the SEP, Javier Trevino, stated that the aim of the discussions was to pursue the expansion of cooperation channels, but "with full respect for the law and the strengthening of educational reform".
Yesterday CNTE demonstrations against the education reforms continued across the country.
