Mexico's ruling party suffers major setbacks in regional elections (Al Jazeera English)

President Enrique Peña Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI, in Spanish), was asked today to review itself from within, particular with respect to its leaders' management, after the party's adverse results in the elections held in Mexico on June 5th.

The party that have governed the country for decades suffered a setback in Sunday's elections in which governors, deputies and mayors were elected in more than a dozen states and in Mexico City, an election was held for constituents to elaborate the capital's first constitution.

According to a preliminary official count, the PRI suffered large losses in the elections. Out of the 12 states at stake (of which they previously held nine) they are likely to retain only 4 and gain 2 (Oaxaca and Sinaloa).

A day after the election President Enrique Peña Nieto said that the leaders of the party, "must hear and respond to the citizens' message."
