Of the 2.5 million children working currently in Mexico, 46 percent only receive food and a place to live as payment, said Alfonso Navarrete, head of the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare.

The statistic was announced during the 11th Inter-Ministerial Commission for the Prevention and Eradication of Child Labor and the Protection of Young Workers.

The official said that this was not a just problem in Mexico and added that the International Labour Organization (ILO) launched an international campaign to eradicate this scourge in 2009.

According to Navarrete, reforms were implemented to raise the minimum age for admission to employment from 14 to 15 years.

The ILO reports that the states with the highest incidences of child exploitation in Mexico are Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero, which are also the poorest states in the country.
