Border Patrol agents are used to confronting dangers along the roughly 2,000-mile border with Mexico but now they're confronting a new challenge from their bosses.

"That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard," Chris Cabrera, with the National Border Patrol Council, said criticizing a proposal by the agency to award agents for not using "deadly force" against armed suspects.

It's an idea he didn't know about until a Border Patrol supervisor leaked the memo to Circa News

"That award is going to condition agents to second guess themselves, to hesitate," Cabrera said. "Granted nobody wants to start their day thinking well I may have to inflict bodily harm on another person but, it's not anything that somebody looks forward to but sometimes it is a reality."

The award recognizes agents who disarm a suspect using contact controls and verbal commands. But Cabrera worries this initiative could put agents at risk.
