Amazing aerial drone video: Mobula rays are seen gathered in their thousands in some spectacular footage captured using a drone. (MailOnline)

The animals, known to local fisherman as 'flying tortillas', gather in their thousands before launching themselves out of the ocean. They are closely related to sharks but have long, flat bodies and wing-like pectoral fins.

They use their fins like wings to reach heights of over two metres before belly-flopping back down into the sea to join the school.

The extraordinary footage was captured by zoologist and wildlife photographer Mark Carwadine. He encountered the spectacular displays from the rays on his annual trip to the Mexican state.

He said: 'I spend every winter running whale-watching trips in Baja California, Mexico – it's one of my favorite places on the planet.
