The government and project architect Norman Foster have made much of the new airport’s environmental credentials, claiming it will be a “world leader in sustainable design, construction and operation.”

However, there are several catches.

“The environmental impact statement (EIS) is neither objective, nor technical, but instead attempts to hide much of the real damage that the new airport will cause,” biologist Fernando Córdova told El Daily Post.

Córdova also points out that the company that produced the environmental impact statement, Especialistas Ambientales, was set up by Rodolfo Lacy, the current undersecretary of planning at the Environment Secretariat (Semarnat).

Semarnat approved the project without modification last year, without a hint of conflict of interest.

Córdova, together with other scientists, carried out a detailed review of the project’s EIS, concluding that the new airport will have a disastrous effect on the area’s already over-stressed water supply.

The EIS claims that water use in the new airport will be 70 percent lower than the current airport but this calculation does not include water used in the Aerotropolis, a commercial development within the new airport site.
