Reporter and political commentator Denise Dresser said she was weighing the possibility of making an independent run for the presidency in 2018 if no candidate addresses Mexico’s most pressing problems.

“Look, I ask myself that and they ask me every day,” Dresser said in response to a question about her presidential aspirations from journalist Javier Risco, who hosts the television program “Sin lugar a dudas.”

Dresser said she thought about making a run while listening to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, or IACHR, Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts make their recommendations in the case involving the disappearance of 43 education students in southern Mexico in 2014.

“I was sitting in the auditorium listening to the Interdisciplinary Group of (Independent) Experts speak about their 20 recommendations, which go beyond Ayotzinapa, which have to do with the rule of law, which have to do with the independence of the prosecutors, which have to do with fighting corruption,” Dresser said, adding that she asked herself “who is going to take up this banner, who is going to push these causes.”

...Dresser, who was born in Mexico City in 1963, is a columnist for Proceso magazine and the daily Reforma, among other Mexican media outlets.
