Acapulco, considered the most violent city in Mexico, has welcomed its new security secretary, who will have to confront the high rates of violence and murder in the municipality.

Acapulco's city hall today approved the appointment of Max Lorenzo Sedano as the head of the municipal Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) in this port on the Mexican Pacific coast.

Sedano, aged 57, has also served as a frigate captain of the Mexican Navy from 1975 to 2012, and director general of the University Institute of Police Sciences in the state of Guerrero.

His previous public post was deputy director general of Police Investigative Operations at the Attorney General's Office in Veracruz.

Acapulco's Mayor Evodio Velazquez said the appointment was supported by the three Government branches (federal, state and municipal) in order to improve public safety in the city, where criminal groups are competing for the drug market.
