A "super tunnel" used for trafficking drugs from Mexico has been found by authorities in California.

Stretching almost 800 meters from a wooden pallets storehouse in northwest Mexico's Tijuana City to a neighborhood in the US San Diego suburb of Otay Mesa, the underground tunnel, less than a meter wide, was equipped with lights, ventilation, a rail system and a motorized freight elevator capable of carrying up to 10 people.

US agents arrested six individuals accused of operating the tunnel and confiscated one ton of cocaine with a street value of $32 million along with seven tons of marijuana.

In the past five years, federal authorities have detected more than 75 cross-border smuggling tunnels, most of them in California and Arizona.

US authorities said these tunnels show the determination of drug trafficking organizations like the Sinaloa cartel, infamous by its former leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman who escaped prison through a tunnel last summer before being captured by authorities. - Associated Press
