Numerous people from different parts of southeastern Mexico are undertaking the emotionally distressing task of trying to identify loved ones who died inside a petrochemical plant devastated last week by an explosion, a blast whose death toll has risen to 28.

The first step, according to those who have already undergone the process at the Clorados 3 plant at Pajaritos, one of three petrochemical complexes in this Gulf coast port city, is to examine photographs of horribly burned faces, each of which is numbered.

If they believe they recognize their relative in a photo, these individuals are next taken to a room with black plastic bags containing the remains of plant workers who perished in the explosion.

Should that first-hand examination leave them with no doubts, then laboratory tests are carried out to definitively confirm the identity of the victim.
