Thousands of members of several indigenous tribes who inhabit various regions of Mexico marched on the Reforma Avenue in Mexico City, Monday, demanding freedom for political prisoners and a greater role in decision-making on issues concerning the communities they live in. Marchers also commemorated the 97th anniversary of the assassination of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata.
Indigenous people from places all across Mexico - such as Chiapas, Guerrero, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Veracruz and Oaxaca - are said to have arrived in the Mexican capital to seek larger government financial support for indigenous agriculture and a say in the acquisition of land by mining companies, especially Canadian firms.
