'Broad and Participatory' National Debate on the Use of Marijuana Concludes Latin American Herald Tribune

The Mexican interior minister, Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said that the country's approach regarding marijuana regulation and its economic implications, the goal should be "to weaken the illegal drug market."

At the end of the 'Fifth Forum on Marijuana Use' held on Wednesday at the Palace of Mines in the historic center of Mexico City, Osorio Chong stressed that the debate promoted by Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto has been "broad and participatory."

The minister said that many academics, officials, national and international specialist took part in this forum and they discussed the issue with "clarity and precision."

He added that it is a "complex issue that must be addressed with responsibility and long-term vision."

The problem of marijuana use "has many aspects and requires absolute precision in order to define what the problem is and what the alternative solutions are," he said.

President Pena Nieto has been following every debate and in the coming days, the conclusions of the forum "will define an official stance from the government."
