What does Romayne Wheeler's music represent for the people of the Sierra Tarahumara? (El Daily Post)

A year ago, Romayne Wheeler decided to undertake the most ambitious task of his 55-year musical career. He would write a melody for each and every thing around him.

The 73-year-old musician, a musicologist as well as concert pianist, who had studied at the same school as Mozart and Beethoven, has since written pieces for rocks, maguey cactus, five dogs, two cats and the July clouds.

He says he still needs to write music for the stars, for his neighbors in the Sierra Tarahumara, and to the wind.

“Everything has a soul,” is how he sees it. “Every flower, plant, stone, animal has its own pulse. I decided to feell the pulse of the things around me, and from there began a whole string of compositions.”

These pieces — such as the polka to a horse, the sonata to a cat and the song to a mountain range — were performed in 2015 during a tour he made of Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany and Holland.

Romayne was born in Santa Helena, California. He is 5’11” with blue eyes, a blond crown and a beer belly. His wardrobe includes five Rarárumi-style shirts woven by his neighbors in sizes much larger than they’re used to.
