This Artist Is Erasing the U.S.-Mexico Border Fence with Blue Paint (AJ+)

International artist, Ana Teresa Fernandez will be staging her third installment of “Borrando la Frontera” (Erasing the Border), on April 9, with contributors in Douglas and Agua Prieta.

Fernandez’s project began at the bordering shores of Tijuana and San Diego, where she painted the fence the same color as the sky, thus creating an illusion that the fence had been erased.

In partnership with Arizona-based cultural collective, Border/Arte, Fernández will work with community members in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexicali, Baja California, and arts leaders and community members in Agua Prieta and Douglas to simultaneously erase the border.

“Erasing the Border was birthed because I wanted to imagine, and allow others to imagine, a different truth,” said Fernández, “I wanted to depict a place where countries could touch without being separated by prison bars but instead, united by sky.”

The collaboration between Fernández and Border/Arte upholds the shared values of politics and ethics of arts practices on the border, states Michael Soto, Border/Arte Media.

“Border/Arte produces cultural work that inspires us to reimagine a more just world,” a member from Border/Arte said, “‘Borrando la Frontera’ reminds us that border walls are human made; that they too can be disappeared; that ideology, not steel, props up border walls. ‘Borrando la Frontera’ is the type of transgressive arts work we support.”
