Atlanta-based Hooters announced Friday they purchased a private island off the coast of Mexico with plans to build a swanky resort. Everyone working there would be a Hooters Girl.

Hooters Air, which suspended all operations in 2006, plans to return to the airline business to handle travel to the private Island.

Hold off on those bachelor party plans.

The press release came on Friday, April 1. April Fool's Day. Then again, this is from the company that really did run Hooters Air for three years, still has their waitresses wear those itty bitty orange shorts, and added salads to their menu in an effort to attract females.

It's hard to know when Hooters is joking. A closer look at the announcement shows a surprising depth to the trickery.

CLAIM: "The island is located off the coast of Mexico near the island of Numenor."
TRUTH: Númenor is a fictional place in J.R.R. Tolkin's writings. The Middle Earth location was a nod to another imaginary island: Atlantis. Yes, Hooters just used a literary reference in their April Fool's Day joke.

CLAIM: "The island has been developed very carefully."
TRUTH: Does that island look vaguely familiar? Perhaps like an upside down Australia? It is. The blue image below is an image of Australia. The orange overlay is the imaginary Hooters island.

...When we asked a spokesperson if the island was a joke, she said, "Well, kind of." The island is fake, but a trip giveaway is real. They're pushing the hoax for all it's worth, hoping #HootersIsland goes viral.
