Javier Sicilia, at the commemorative event Monday (Cuartoscuro)

It was five years ago Monday when the body of Juan Francisco Sicilia Ortega, the 24-year-old son of the renowned Mexican poet and activist Javier Sicilia, was found along with six others in Cuernavaca.

The elder Sicilia marked the grim anniversary with a commemorative event and a public missive in which he said that very little has changed in Mexico since the murder of his son in 2011.

The major difference, he said, is that while the Calderón administration that was in office at the time of his son’s death promoted violence, the current Peña Nieto administration ignores it.

“If the Felipe Calderón administration was characterized by exalting violence and creating a state of emergency  ... Peña Nieto’s is characterized by a government that refuses to recognize the nation’s violence and humanitarian tragedy,” he wrote.

Sicilia had responded to the murder of his son by organizing what was dubbed the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity, usually abbreviated as MPJD. The poet and his supporters marched along Mexican and U.S highways in a protest movement marked by peaceful behavior and a quiet but insistent purposefulness.

But the violence has only increased in the ensuing five years, he said Monday.
