Over one smartphone per second sold in Mexico in 2015, or 68 units per minute, translating to a total of 35.7 million for the year, according to Oliver Aguilar, manager of consumer affairs and telecommunications at IDC Mexico, reports Excelsior.
Aguilar said that the sales growth was mainly driven by attractive offers by operators and greater competition. He added that it is possible the figure will rise this year, by 2-3 percent.
IDC estimates that there will be around 111.9 million active smartphones in Mexico in 2020, representing an 8.6 percent growth compared to figures for the end of 2014. Given the current exchange rate, IDC expects the IT market will be worth USD 23.4 billion this year, up 3.8 percent on 2015.
