Greater Police Controls After Murder of Mayor in Morelos State (teleSUR English)

The Mexico offices of UN Women and the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner condemned the assassination of Gisela Raquel Mota Ocampo, Mayor of the Municipality of Temixco, Morelos, which occurred on January 2, just hours after she had taken office.

"The mayor was shot dead by a commando group of four armed men who entered her home, where she lived with her mother," the international organization reiterated in a statement.

The UN agencies warned that although the Constitutional reqirement for parity of womem in office has allowed Mexico to move towards equality of women in Congress, these crimes can inhibit women's political participation in municipalities, where their presence is still insufficient.

They called on the responsible government institutions to act with diligence and investigate the crime from the perspective of gender, and to capture, prosecute and punish the intellectual and material authors.
