Citizens of Mexico Are Most Dissatisfied with Democracy in Latin America: Survey Aristegui Noticias

According to the 2015 Latinobarómetro survey, released on September 25, Mexico ranks last in citizen satisfaction with democracy in Latin America. A majority of Mexicans are dissatisfied with democracy, and fewer than half believe it is the best form of government.

Functioning of Democracy: The survey, carried out from January 15 to February 15 [2015] among more than 20,000 people in 18 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, indicates that only 19% of Mexicans are satisfied with the functioning of democracy, well below the regional average of 37%. Mexico, Peru, Paraguay and Brazil are the nations least satisfied with the functioning of democracy; [satisfaction] levels are below 25%. In contrast, Uruguay, Ecuador, Argentina and the Dominican Republic report satisfaction levels above 50%.

Presidential Approval: Mexico reports the lowest (35%) since 2002 [Vicente Fox, PAN]. Latinobarómetro measurements indicate that 41% (2004) was the lowest approval reported for President Vicente Fox; in 2006 it rose to 60%. President Felipe Calderón's approval swung between 52% (2009) and 59% (2013).

At 35%, Presidential approval reported in Mexico is among the lowest in Latin America, behind countries like Chile (49%), Nicaragua (60%), Panama (62%), Bolivia (71%), Uruguay (72%), and Dominican Republic (82%); it is just above percentages reported for countries like Venezuela (30%), Brazil (29%), Paraguay (26%) and Peru (24%).

Democracy Preferable to Other Forms of Government: The survey reports that support for democracy exceeds 70% in such countries as Venezuela and Uruguay; in Guatemala democratic support is 33%. In Mexico, only 48% of over 1,000 [Mexican] respondents agree with this statement, although this figure is eleven points higher than reported in 2013.
