A journalist affiliated with Televisa received millions through contracts with the Mexican federal government. (Reuters)

Joaquin Lopez Doriga, one of Mexico's most recognizable journalists, received approximately US$14 million in contracts with various government entities since 2001, Proceso magazine revealed in an exposé published this weekend.    

According to the investigation by Proceso, Lopez Doriga received contracts for publicity and promotion from government departments including the Mexican Social Security Institute via two firms named Astron and Ancla.

Lopez Doriga's wife, Adriana Perez Romo, served as the legal representative of Astron Publicity. The company subcontracted work to another company known as Telecomportal, which Romo owns shares in as well.    

The transmission of promotional spots, commentaries by the journalist on radio, as well as “consulting” are some of the services specified in the contracts.

In carrying out these contracts the magazine alleges that Lopez Doriga essentially presented advertising and propaganda as journalism. This practice was legal until September 2014 when the Supreme Court decided to prohibit it.

...These revelations further expose the links between the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party of President Enrique Peña Nieto and the private media in Mexico. A report published by Forbes magazine in June revealed Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has spent almost US$1 billion in publicity over his three years in power.
