Danzon: An Old Dance of Romance Thrives in Mexico CCTV America

Mexico’s youth are embracing a new dance that is really not new at all. It’s been around for over a century. The classic couple dance called “Danzon” was born in Cuba in the mid-1800’s incorporating African and European musical influences.

The sensuous dance is characterized by twirling, dipping and embracing. It is usually performed by elegantly dressed couples who evoke nostalgia for the past.

Danzon was brought to Mexico by a travelling theatre troupe from Cuba. Mexicans added their own twist to it. Today Danzon has essentially disappeared from the Cuban music scene, replaced by salsa. But in Mexico its popularity has grown.   A 1991 movie called “Danzon” also gave its reputation a boost.

Traditionally, Danzon appealed to couples in their golden years, but now a new generation is giving it a whirl.
