Mexico's President Disappoints Parents of Missing Ayotzinapa Students - Again (AJ+)
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has expressed his satisfaction about his meeting with the parents of 43 students who went missing last year from Iguala municipality. On the other hand, the parents expressed their feeling of having been deceived by the government's response.
Of the eight demands presented by the parents, the president "as of today did not make any promise on any of them," Vidulfo Rosales, the lawyer for the affected families, said after the meeting.
"He unilaterally made six possible commitments" that "are not substantial" and many of them "were already agreed upon," he added at a press conference in Mexico City's Zocalo square.
During a three-hour-long meeting at the capital's Technology Museum, Peña Nieto listened to the families and said he shares their pain and understands their indignation, while reiterating his government's intention to clarify the case of the missing students.
After the meeting, government spokesperson Eduardo Sanchez said at a press conference that families of the students submitted a document with eight demands to the president which he signed "as acknowledgement of receipt." The document would be analyzed to check the "viability" of each one of the demands, he added.
The eight demands included putting a stop to stigmatization of students of Ayotzinapa teachers' training school (to which the 43 students belonged), allowing IACHR experts to continue with the investigations for another year and government compliance with their recommendations, and immediate and dignified attention to the injured and the families, among others.
