Thousands of Mexicans have joined a social media campaign, #NadaQueCelebrar or Nothing to Celebrate, urging people in Mexico City and other major cities to not attend official celebrations of Mexico’s independence, as a symbolic protest against the violence and corruption prevailing in the country.
Every year, on the night of Sept. 15, the president addresses the Mexican people from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City, as do local leaders throughout the country and at diplomatic missions abroad. They shout slogans commemorating national heroes and ends with a cheer echoed three times by the crowds that have gathered: “Viva Mexico!”
People have been sharing and posting pictures and messages asking Mexicans to celebrate in their houses instead of in public squares, especially the Zocalo Square in the country's capital, where President Enrique Peña Nieto will lead the ceremony. Analysts predict there will be a significant drop in the number of attendees compared to previous years.
The widespread social unrest has forced authorities to scale back its plans, especially as the first anniversary of the disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa trainee teachers approaches on Sept. 26. Other issues including the corruption allegations, a stagnant economy and numerous human rights violations, have been plaguing Peña Nieto’s government.
