Mexico Investigates 'Cannabis Culture' Magazine for 'Immorality and Indecency' Mexico News Daily

The federal government has taken issue with a magazine whose focus is “cannabis culture” on the grounds that it promotes activities that are contrary to “morality” and “decency.”

The Interior Secretariat has referred the matter to the Attorney-General’s office, which will now determine whether the publication Cáñamo México is being published unlawfully.

The first issue of the magazine appeared on May 4, and it has since covered cannabis-related information from a non-prohibitionist standpoint, copying its 18-year old counterpart in Spain.

The magazine’s publishers say it seeks to “contribute to a new understanding of cannabis, from the related points of view of science, history, art and culture behind this magnificent plant, a companion of humankind since time immemorial.” But it also states it will do so without “overlooking the cruel reality that our country finds itself in,” stemming from the war on organized crime.

The Assessment Commission for Illustrated Publications and Magazines, whose job is to vet publications to ensure they are not encouraging immoral behavior, decided that Cáñamo publishes stories that indirectly defend the recreational consumption of cannabis, “and goes as far as to comment upon the age at which marijuana consumption could be appropriate.”
