In response to a letter from 500 intellectuals worldwide, including Noam Chomsky, calling on the Mexican government to defend journalists and the freedom of the press, authorities pledged to crack down on violence against media workers.
Mexico is one of the most dangerous nations in the world for journalists and several recent high profile killings have put the spotlight on the country and sparked protests at home and abroad.
