Human Rights Groups Call for Immediate Release of Imprisoned Nestora Salgado Hector Briseno and Jose Antonio Roman - La Jornada

Human rights advocates from non-governmental organizations [NGO] launched an urgent appeal to the federal government and Guerrero state government to effect the immediate release of Nestora Salgado Garcia, La Comandanta [The Commander] of Olinalá Community Police, who was arrested on August 21, 2013.

Members of the National Network of Human Rights Defenders in Mexico, the Mesoamerican Initiative for Women Defenders of Human Rights and the National Network of Civil Human Rights Organizations All Rights for All said that the arrest of Salgado Garcia was plagued by irregularities and violations of her individual rights; additionally, due process was not respected.

In a letter to President Enrique Peña Nieto, and posted on the Internet to gather support, states that a lack of political will for Nestora's release has been shown during this time, despite the fact that from the outset there has been no evidence to support the allegations against her and that serious violations of due process have been demonstrated - violations that invalidate Guerrero judicial proceedings.

Proof of this is that last March 30, despite the fact that the Twenty-First Unitary Circuit [Federal] Court based in Chilpancingo revoked the detention order for organized crime on the order of kidnapping, and [therefore,] ordered García Salgado's immediate release, this did not result in her release, and state prosecutions are ongoing.

This, they added, is a further violation of her rights: being tried in two different courts for the same events, which makes both her defense and access to justice more difficult.
