The population of the Earth will grow from 7.3 billion people at present to between 9.5 and 13.3 billion people in 2100. This projected exponential growth in population was the result of research conducted by John R. Wilmoth, director of the United Nations Population Division, and colleagues. The study was presented at the August 10, 2015, session of the 2015 Joint Statistical Meetings in Seattle.
Population growth is expected by be highest in Africa where a higher fertility rate and a minimal use of birth control are expected to produce a population of 3.4 billion people by the end of this century. Although most of Africa is still considered poor by Western standards, the improvement in health care and assistance from other countries has improved the lot of many people in Africa. Asia will remain the most populous region of the world in 2100 with a projected population of 4.9 billion people by the end of the century.
The number of people between the ages of 20 and 64 that support older people will see a large decline across the world by 2100. The index called the potential support ratio will see the sharpest decline in China, Mexico, and Bangladesh. African countries will see an increase in the potential support ratio by 2100. The aging population of the world is reflected in a projected median age of people in the United States to be 44.8 in 2100.
The study and report were prepared so that governments can plan for the future population of the planet. Population control may again become a political football of true import as nations realize that they do not have the finances or the resources to feed, clothe, educate, and house a population of 11 billion. Prosperous nations will be expected to provide more assistance to less prosperous nations as populations increase. One might expect wars to be fought for food in the future instead of for territory or religion.
