The US federal government's new chief drug enforcement officer said that he suspects that Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is still in Mexico following his dramatic escape last month from a prison west of Mexico City.
Chuck Rosenberg, the acting administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, told reporters that authorities had no hard evidence of the cartel leader's whereabouts, but believed Guzman's enormous access to money and the security of his Sinaloa organization would aid his continued stay in Mexico.
"I think he is still in Mexico," Rosenberg said. "Do I know that? No, I do not know that. Where is he safest and best protected, probably Sinaloa."
Rosenberg, appointed in May by Attorney General Loretta Lynch to replace Michele Leonhart who retired in the wake of an internal Justice investigation into agent misconduct, said the U.S. is providing personnel, intelligence and has posted a $5 million reward to assist in the manhunt for the powerful cartel leader.
