The Mexican delegation to the Pan American Games in Toronto came up in short in meeting the goals it had set for the international sporting event held from July 10-26.
Mexico’s 502 athletes brought home 22 gold medals, down one from the record 23 it won in 1995, and achieved a sixth-place finish in the medal standings, down from the fifth-place position it had held since 1999.
Mexico competes in just a handful of sports that participate in continental competitions. One such sport is racquetball, in which the Mexican team won four gold medals, three of those with rising star Paola Longoria, who won six in singles and doubles play.
Another is diving, in which Paola Espinosa earned 13 medals in Toronto, eight of them gold. With those wins, she and Longoria, who is the two-time defending world champion in both singles and doubles in racquetball, became Mexico’s top winning athletes of all time.
But racquetball is no longer part of the Olympic Games so the team will not compete in Rio de Janeiro next year. “It’s too bad,” Longorio said. “We’re not in those games, so this and the world championships are the limit for me.”
