On Monday, dozens of mexicanas lay still, appearing lifeless, in front of Mexico's Interior Ministry. With chalk outlines around their bodies and orange evidence photo markers by their heads, the group of activists and public officials, imitating a crime scene, chanted "gender alert in the State of Mexico."

The women’s poignant display was done in an effort to draw attention to violence against women in the Mexican state.
Sixty-seven percent of women in Mexico suffer domestic violence, helping to make it one of the world’s top 20 worst countries for violence against women. According to the National Citizen Femicide Observatory, more than 2,300 women have been killed in the last nine years in the State of Mexico alone.
The "gender alert" was created in the city of Ciudad Juarez to combat this gender-based violence. According to Al-Jazeera, the initiative includes new funds to fortify protection and provide assistance to survivors of domestic violence.
Protestors are hoping to set up other "gender alerts" in all municipalities across the State of Mexico.
