US-Mexico Border Seeing Reduction in Illegal Migration (CCTV America)

The flow of immigrants coming into the US is not as overwhelming as previously thought. In fact, legal and illegal Mexican immigration has even decreased by 57% between 2003 and 2012, according to a study by the universities of Texas San Antonio and New Hampshire.

...The recession in the United States between 2007 and 2009 appears to be the prime factor. The slowing US economy generated fewer jobs, especially in construction, the main employment provider for immigrants.

...In addition, the birth rate has dropped to 2.2 children per woman in 2012, according to the World Bank. “In the years 1960-1970, a woman gave birth to seven children on average,” says the academic. Today, “there is more excess labor as before,” so Mexicans do not feel obliged to leave their homeland to find work.

The face of Mexican immigration has also changed. “The Mexican migrants who arrive in the US recently are more likely to naturalize: they speak English fluently and have a degree,” said Rogelio Saenz. This new type of immigration comes largely from the Mexican middle class; many well-educated Mexicans leave their country because of the violence of gang cartels.
