Mexico's Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade said that he welcomed the "historic opening" of Cuba's embassy in Washington and the U.S. embassy in Havana, as the two countries formally restored relations.

"We have been very happy. We think it's great news. A policy of more closeness was announced and the fact of seeing it come to fruition today with the re-opening of the embassies is something we celebrate and makes us happy," said Meade.

After more than five decades of enmity, what was known as the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, is now an embassy.

In Washington too, it's a momentous day for U.S.-Cuban relations, with the Cuban embassy also opening for business.

The official ceremonies will signal a major step toward full normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba, both sides moving closer together after a diplomatic rift that's lasted more than fifty years.
