The Supreme Court of the western Mexican state of Michoacan has ordered the release of 13 vigilantes involved in a shootout that left 11 people dead last December, officials said.

The court ruled on Saturday that there was insufficient evidence linking the suspects to the clash in La Ruana, a community outside the city of Buenavista Tomatlan

The 13 suspects, all members of the community self-defense group led by Luis Antonio Torres, surrendered to the Michoacan Attorney General's Office in April.

Hipolito Mora, founder of the vigilante movement in Michoacan, Torres and 35 other individuals were released in March for lack of evidence in the case.

Mora and his followers engaged the rival vigilante group led by Torres in a shootout in La Ruana on Dec. 16.
