Nestora Salgado was working to fight narcotrafficking and corruption in Mexico's Guerrero State. She was held in August 2013 for “kidnapping,” but she was actually making arrests as part of her regular duties. AJ+ caught up with her husband in January as he made the rounds in the U.S. Capitol to get her released from prison. (AJ+)
Yesterday outside the Tepepan Women's Social Rehabilitation Center - where Nestora Salgado, coordinator of Community Police of Olinalá, Guerrero, is imprisoned - the Women's Committee to Free Nestora held a day of action demanding her immediate and unconditional release.
The day began with a march that set out from the Periférico Light Rail Station and ended up at the prison located in the southern area of Mexico City. From 2:00-9:00 p.m., artists, singers, activists and former political prisoners, among others, participated in the cultural event.
Among the day's activities, two deserve special mention. The first is a message that Salgado had recorded the day before by means of a telephone call with the Women's Committee to Free Nestora. In it, Nestora expressed her gratitude for the support she has received, and she called for the people's continued solidarity with political prisoners. She also asked the Guerrero state Congress to discuss the [pending] Amnesty Law [on her behalf], the Guerrero State Judiciary to review the case, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to monitor her health and violations of her fundamental rights during the ongoing criminal process.
The second is the announcement by one of Salgado's lawyers, César Sandino Rivero, that a hearing will be held on August 10 in Santa Martha Acatitla Prison [also in Mexico City], where his client will have a [long-delayed] confrontational meeting with those who accuse her of kidnapping.
