Former Mexican Official Says Leaked Intel May Have Caused 'El Chapo' Escape

When news broke that the most powerful drug lord in the world - Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman - managed to escape maximum security prison in Mexico for a second time, questions of corruption were immediately raised. Media outlets called it an embarrassment to the Mexican government and President Enrique Peña Nieto, who refused to extradite El Chapo to the U.S. when he was arrested in February 2014.

But a plan of extradition may have been the very reason for El Chapo’s escape this time around.

Former Mexican foreign minister Jorge Castañeda told Fusion’s Jorge Ramos that it’s possible plans of extradition were leaked to El Chapo.
