A Mexican federal court rejected the protection request from famed journalist Carmen Aristegui, who was fired early this year by the international communication network MVS after a row over whistleblowing.

The court's decision Tuesday ends Aristegui's legal process and the possibility of her return to the company where she hosted a four-hour news show, which was Mexico’s most listened to radio program.

"This resolution ends the legal battle to defend the freedom of expression, launched by the journalist last March," Aristegui’s legal team said in a statement.

In June, an administrative court reviewed a request from Aristegui to expand contractual protection. Shortly after, a judge gave MVS a 48-hour deadline to either end the suspension granted to the journalist in May — seen at the time as a concession from the company — or terminate her contract. "There are unresolved key issues that can no longer be considered by any authority, such as journalistic independence, freedom of information and respect for the diversity of opinions," added the Aristegui team.

Aristegui was fired last March after the launch of MexicoLeaks, a website created by independent media organizations in order to share information to denounce and investigate official corruption. The journalist is one of the founders of the site.

The journalist has said that that her coverage of a scandal involving the Mexican president was a factor in her dismissal. Last year, Aristegui and her team revealed that Peña Nieto's wife, former actress Angelica Rivera, purchased a luxurious mansion owned by a major government contractor.
