Mexican women work more hours than men in general and three times more hours doing unpaid tasks in the home, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography said, citing a new survey.
Based on a sample of 19,000 homes, the survey taken during 2014 shows that the entire Mexican population over the age of 12 works, paid or unpaid, almost 6 billion hours a week, and that 60 percent of that time is worked by women, compared with 40 percent by men.
The survey, taken jointly with the National Institute for Women, or INMUJERES, said that out of every 10 hours worked in Mexico, 55.4 percent is time spent on unpaid work in the home, which “contributes to the nation’s economy without garnering any monetary rewards.”
Some 41.9 percent of the total work hours are done on the labor market for remuneration, while a marginal 2.7 percent goes to the unpaid production of goods to be used exclusively in the home, according to the study.
The greatest differences are in the payment for work done, and while men work twice the number of paid hours than women, women work three times more hours than men on domestic tasks, the survey shows.
