The escape of Joaquin El Chapo Guzmán Loera is not only a sign of corruption in the political and prison system of the country, but it also denotes a "serious error" of governance by the government of Enrique Peña Nieto: ignoring the rule that when the president is absent, the Secretary of Government Relations is in charge of national stability, academics emphasized.
Javier Oliva and Pedro Peñaloza, researchers on security issues at the School of Political and Social Sciences and the School of Law, respectively, at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), said it was not the first time that Peña Nieto and Miguel Angel Osorio Chong had left together on a trip, but this time, due to the escape of the drug trafficker, the error is momentous.
However, Imer Flores, from the Institute for Legal Research at UNAM, said that the worst thing is not that the officials were out of Mexico, but the corruption in the prison system and that the Altiplano prison is not a maximum security prison.
Also, for Oliva, the escape of [El Chapo] Guzmán is serious evidence of the level of corruption and impunity in Mexico. Regarding the interview Peña Nieto gave to an international television network [Univision] after the capture of El Chapo in February 2014, when he said a new escape would be "unforgivable", the academic declared it is unforgivable, especially because of the national and international repercussions of the escape.
