If you’re a sugar fan, you might have already heard the recent bad news about just how deadly suger-sweetened beverages can be. A study from Tufts University has revealed that one in every 100 deaths from obesity-related diseases is caused by sugary drinks. In fact, they have now been linked to 184,000 deaths across the globe every year.

76 percent of estimated deaths from sugar sweetened drinks occur in low or middle income countries. Across Latin America and particularly in Mexico, homemade sugary drinks like frescas are immensely popular, as are commercially produced sweetened beverages. Mexico now has the highest death rate from suger-sweetened drinks worldwide by a considerable distance. They kill an estimated 24,000 Mexicans every year – that’s 404.5 deaths per million adults.
