Despite Federal Programs, Mexico's Rural Inequality Is Worse Than Ever

There have been a number of federal programs over the years aimed at reducing rural poverty. None of them have done much sustained good.

...Scarcity is standard, as it is in most of the Mexican countryside. Work is done with yoke and machete, and “exports” is a distant concept. Three out of 10 campesinos — small farmers and farmworkers — don’t earn enough to eat right. That’s more than double the urban hunger rate.

In short, poverty and inequality have been part of life in rural Mexico for as long as anybody can remember.

The government is aware of this and has tried one anti-poverty program after another to address the situation. The results have not been encouraging.
