Rights group Reporters Without Borders called Sunday on the Mexican president to take measures to end violence against journalists in his country, as he prepares for a four-day state visit to France.

The Paris-based group, known by its French initials RSF, pointed to the "worrying situation" for the press in Mexico, where it says 86 journalists and media workers have been killed since 2000.

"These figures make Mexico the deadliest country in the Americas for journalists, and places it 148th out of 180 countries in the Press Freedom Index published by RSF in February 2015," the group said in an open letter to Enrique Pena Nieto.

It pointed to "murders, kidnappings and assaults of journalists, increasing impunity, a climate of auto-censorship."

"It is urgent to reflect on what solutions to bring to serious problems affecting freedom of information in the country," the group said.

RSF gave several examples of violence against journalists since the beginning of the year, many linked to legislative elections held in June.
